Mark Shelhamer has been Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (with a secondary appointment in Biomedical Engineering) at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine since 1994. Before that, he was a postdoctoral fellow with David A. Robinson, and a Research Associate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He came to Johns Hopkins from MIT, where he did his doctoral work under Dr. Laurence Young, on analysis and mathematical modeling of vestibularly-driven eye movements (the linear VOR). While at MIT, he participated in ground support experiments and testing of astronauts before and after two space shuttle flights (Spacelab 1 in 1983 and Spacelab D-1 in 1985). He received MS and BS degrees from Drexel University in 1982. Other active research projects (funded by the Whitaker Foundation, NIH, and NSF) study the adaptation of angular and linear vestibulo-ocular reflexes and saccades. Dr. Shelhamer's other research interests include signal processing, instrumentation, and nonlinear dynamics in physiology.
